Is roof cleaning important to

have done on your home?

The simple answer to this question is YES! Having your roof cleaned is as important as any other regular maintenance needed on your property. Cleaning your roof by a professional will firstly increase the lifespan of the roof and more importantly stopping future costly problems that can occur to your home. Here in the UK we are not unfortunately blessed with the best of the weather. Your roof will have to experience a lot of windy & rainy days throughout the year. This constant wetness and dampness will cause many things to grow on your roof, things like moss, algae, lichen etc + much more. Damp tiles on your roof is a particularly good food source for moss and algae! The longer you leave it the more it will grow and spread. Eventually it will start eating its way through roof tiles and begin rotting the wood underneath that is there to support your roof. Having all the tiles replaced or repaired in general is an excessively big expense to anyone that honestly you could do without. The roof tiles on your property are there to protect the internal part of your home. Once moss & algae has grown and spread on your roof it will inevitably start cracking and damaging the tiles. This can cause leaks that will find its way directly into your internal section of your property. Dampness and mould will start to appear, which can lead to structural damage down the road. Not only is dampness and mould a health risk to people and pets, but it can also cause your property not to be safe to live in. If your roof has large patches of moss & algae or debris on it, it will eventually proceed to filling up your guttering system. Again, another regular maintenance job that should not be overlooked by any means. If your gutters are full and get blocked up by the likes of chunks of moss, debris, twigs etc. It will stop your guttering system from carrying out the job its designed and installed for! They are designed for carrying rainwater that your roof takes on, then for the water to flow through your gutters and down the downpipe and away from your brickwork, windows and doors. If your gutters are full or blocked this above process cannot be achieved due to moss blockages etc. The rainwater will eventually find its way into your property! Water damaged window doors or even damp and mould in rooms in your home.

Improve the appearance of your

home by having your roof

cleaned!

Having your roof cleaned by trained professionals will not only stop future problems happening, but it will also improve the appearance of your home externally. Having lots of green moss, algae, debris and stains on your roof is not a pretty sight. Let’s be honest who wouldn’t want they’re roof to look clean rather than full of moss & stains etc. Depending on the age and style of your roof tiles, having your roof cleaned can bring them back looking brand new. Some of our customers in fact just do not like walking into they’re gardens and seeing big chunks of moss every where on the floor. Even if they clean up what is on the floor, moss, debris etc will constantly keep falling off the roof, it just will not go away!

Why hire a Professional to clean

your roof?

Firstly, we would not recommend you try cleaning your roof yourself. It can be an extremely dangerous task to do, especially if you do not have the correct tools or scaffolding etc. Roof cleaning should only be carried out by a competent trained experience professional. Please do not put your life at risk just to save a bit of money. Talking about saving money, please be very aware of cowboy companies that offer a cheaper solution to cleaning your roof. We are currently very aware of many cowboy style businesses operating in our local areas that do not follow the correct procedure in professionally cleaning your roof. For example, these guys will not use any form of scaffolding or towers and will have no safety measures in place. They will only use ladders and physically walk around on your roof while using a high-powered jet sprayer to blast on to your roof tiles. This style of roof cleaning is not only extremely dangerous to themselves, but they will end up causing more damage to your roof than good! Having them walking directly onto your tiles old or new, can cause the tile to break or even movement slips that leaves gaps for rainwater to flow into. These cowboys will use a high-powered jet washer directly on to the tile to remove moss etc Again roof tiles are not capable of receiving that sort of blast from a high-powered water jet sprayer! This will cause more cracks, damage and gaps on your roof and I cannot stress again the importance of this not to happen with the major costly future problems this can cause to your home. Another point that I would like to add that cheap cowboy roof cleaners will not do, is to use a professional roof cleaning chemical called biocide. When a biocide roof cleaning chemical is applied to your roof (after cleaning) not only will it help remove stains etc, but it will also stop any moss or algae from growing on your roof for up to 2 years! So basically, after an unprofessional roof cleaner has walked all over your roof, blasting a power jet spray, Yes, your roof will look clean and you will feel good job done! But in fact, because they have probably cut corners and not used any chemicals that kills moss and algae and prevents any future growth. Moss and algae will regrow within 6 months! Not to mention if they have not already left a trail of damage to your roof tiles. So please bear in mind, when hiring a roof cleaning company, please ask what procedures they will be carrying out. There is a reason why in some cases they are cheap but hindsight they can end you up with costly future repairs!

How often should you have your

roof cleaned?

If your roof has been cleaned correctly in the past by a professional with the use of the right roof tile cleaning chemicals (Biocide), then you should only need to have your roof cleaned approx. every 2-3 years. Obviously, this time frame all depends on a few different variants, for example where your property is situated and its surroundings. Do you have many tree’s nearby or even over hanging your roof? This can shorten the regularity of having your roof cleaned. In general, once every 2-3 years is a good timescale to maintain the lifespan of your roof and to protect against any foreseeable costly repair problems in the future.
